WebP is an image format employing both lossy and lossless compression. It is currently developed by Google, based on technology acquired with the purchase of On2 Technologies. As a derivative of the VP8 video format, it is a sister project to the WebM multimedia container format.

WebP format images are 25% smaller in size compared to PNGs and 30-40% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index. WebP is natively supported in Google Chrome, Firefox, Edge and by many other tools and software libraries, which will make your website fast and load time will be low.

*wordpress default settings won’t allow you to upload webp format images to media library, but by using this plugin you will be able to upload and preview webp format images.
